Kinja'd!!!

Any specific problems I should know about? I saw a good condition 318ti for sale today, and I’m seriously intrigued.

It’s $3,300, and has like 160,000 miles on it.

My dad has a z3 with nearly 100k on the clock, and if the 318 is anything like that, I’m hoping it should be pretty reliable.

Danke

For the 318 in particular, you’ll want to make sure the profile gasket for the water passage at the front of the engine has been replaced. I’ve seen those M44s well exceed 200k with regular service, they’re really a solid little engine but are saddled with too much weight to move around. Once on the cams, they’re really fun. I’ve been seeing a few need the knock sensors replaced, which entails pulling off the intake plenum, but it’s not too hard. The chassis are very solid, but the interiors are a real weak point. The Ti shares its rear suspension design with the E30, so it doesn’t compare to other E36s from the B-pillar back. The front ends are identical, so you can swap M3 stuff, or whatever you want.

Upon purchasing it, you will be unable to recall what those lines in parking lots are for, or what that weird lever on the dash that makes the amber lights blink is there for.

E36/5

When’s the last time it got a clutch? How’s the coolant system holding up? Sunroof? Does the key turn backwards? How’s the oil?

All in all, should be as reliable as long as you’re willing to wrench on it.

Also, rust.

Rust is evil.

As others have pointed out already, the hatchbacks are an E30/E36 hybrid. They just dived into their parts bin to get a Golf VR6 rival as cheap as possible. Which doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The parts they used from E30s were tried and tested. As far as I know they included the rear axle, the dashboard (obviously), and the headlights.

Thanks.

It’s got a new starter, and I’ll definitely ask about the cooling system.

No sunroof, so yay. No rust that I could see during my admittedly rushed walkaround.

Bring a mirror and look under the car for any leaks and rust

Sounds completely overpriced to me. These shouldn’t go for more than a grand even with thousands of miles less.

The Z3 and 318ti actually have very similar underpinnings with the front based off of the E36 and rear based off the E30. (E36/7 and E36/5) As for the 318ti (I’m currently on my second which I autocross) the cooling system is the first thing to look out for as at 160k it will need to be replaced if not already, if this is not already done then you could very easily blow the headgasket. The window regulators suck but other than that there really arent any other specific 318ti issues. Also what year is it? As 96+ have some differences from the 95 models, chiefly the M44 vs M42. Check out 318ti.org, theres A TON of info there and most of the guys there are awesome and really helpful.

The 318ti is one of the most awesome BMW’s ever made (second only to the Isetta), especially if it has the canvas sunroof! They’re so cool and sooooo underrated!
